The Deputy Health and Disability Commissioner, Disability, has welcomed the appointment of Prudence Walker as the new Kaihautū Tika Hauātanga Disability Rights Commissioner.
Rose Wall says Prudence Walker brings extensive disability rights advocacy experience to the role and is a highly regarded leader in the disability sector.
“As a long-time advocate for disabled people, and former Chief Executive of the Disabled Persons Assembly, Prudence brings a robust understanding of ableism and the barriers faced by tāngata whaikaha and disabled New Zealanders.
“The appointment is a fitting recognition of the significant contribution Prudence has given the disability sector over time, and I am confident this will only continue into the future in this new role.
“HDC is acutely aware of the inequities of tāngata whaikaha across the health and disability sector, and recognises much work has yet to be done to achieve an inclusive, accessible society for all disabled people. I look foward to working with Prudence and together forging an enduring and effective relationship”.
